The map of the 2025 civics test: seven sections, and where your study time should go

72 questions on government, 44 on history, 12 on symbols and geography. What each section covers and how much of your time it deserves.

The 128 questions on the 2025 civics test are not a flat list. USCIS groups them into seven sections under three headings, and the sections are very different sizes. Knowing the map tells you where to spend your time, and where a few minutes buys a lot.

The three headings

HeadingQuestionsShare of the test
American Government72About 56%
American History44About 34%
Symbols and Holidays / Geography12About 9%

Over half the test is government. If you have limited time, that is where it goes.

The seven sections

Where the time goes

System of Government is 47 questions, more than a third of the test. It is also the section with the most numbers and the most "why" questions. Give it the most time and come back to it last, the day before the interview.

Additional civics is 12 questions and almost free. Thirteen stripes, fifty stars, Washington, D.C., the Star-Spangled Banner, three holidays. An hour covers it. Do it first, so you start with a section you own.

Rights and Responsibilities is 10 questions but they overlap with the state questions and the voting amendments, so studying it well pays twice.

The three history sections together are 44. Learn them as a timeline, not as three lists: founders, then the 1800s, then the 1900s. The wars and the people are most of it.

A three-week plan by section

  1. Week one: Additional civics in a day, then Principles of American Government and Rights and Responsibilities.
  2. Week two: System of Government, the whole week, with a practice test at the end to find the gaps.
  3. Week three: the three history sections as one timeline, then practice tests in the real format every day, studying only the sections you miss.

Study by section in our material and the practice tests report results by section, so the map on this page is the same map your results use.
